Emotion coaching courses are delivered as a way to support and continue emotional and behavioural well-being. Therefore, the course is suitable for any adult who touches children.Parents, healthcare professionals, education providers’ staff and social workers can attend the emotion coaching course that presents an approach to adult-child communication.
The theoretical and practical topics included in the emotion coaching course are as follows:
After graduating from the Middle East Technical University in 2009, I worked as assistant teacher in Hamburg-Germany for 1 year. I started practicing my profession as a teacher in 2013. After 1 year study of scientific preparation, I enrolled in the Master’s Program with Thesis on General Psychology at Arel University in 2014.
As someone working children, I noticed the benefits of what I had learned about emotional intelligence during my psychology education, I decided to continue my work in this field. John Gottman's 40 years of research on emotion coaching, parenting styles and high contributions to the development of children provided an important guidance for me. With an ambition to deepen my research on emotion coaching, I chose “Impact of Emotion Coaching Training on Mothers’ Parenting Styles” as the topic of my thesis and trained parents after translating the original parent training of Gottman to Turkish. The results demonstrated that the participants’ parenting styles changed significantly. The paper of my thesis was the first of its kind in Turkey in the field of emotion coaching.
In December 2018, I attended the EmotionCoachingUK courses delivered by the researchers Janet Rose, Loise Gilbert and Licette Gus and disseminated to schools and parents in the UK to contributed to the emotional and behavioural development of children and adolescents. Fulfilling the requirements to get qualified, I was awarded as “EmotionCoachingUK Practitioner Trainer”. Moreover, I also attended the Gottman couples therapy courses to extend my knowledge on the Gottman method and Experiential Game Therapy to learn about the game language which is one of the ways of expressing emotions.
The experience I’ve gained from national and international education providers has showed that the emotional experience of children and the understanding and compassion they expect from their parents are the same although there are cultural differences and varying opportunities. In this sense, my goal is to provide guidance as an educator and an expert in psychology to anyone who touches children about who to raise and connect with children.
“Despite high interest in emotional literacy among some educators, these courses are as yet rare; most teachers, principals, and parents simply do not know they exist. The best models are largely outside the education mainstream, in a handful of private schools and a few hundred public schools. Of course no program, including this one, is an answer to every problem. But given the crises we find ourselves and our children facing, and given the quantum of hope held out by courses in emotional literacy, we must ask ourselves: Shouldn't we be teaching these most essential skills for life to every child—now more than ever?
And if not now, when?”
